Respected Shekhar ji!
Thanks for your letter.
Though I am not an expert on Baul or anything else. I am not a Dalit Thinker nor a brand like others in vogue.
But I have tried my best to trace the heritage of indigenous cultural social roots. In India, I believe Dilectics was first practiced by Charvak Clan. It is materism against spritual brahminical dominance. Then Buddhism was perhaps the greatest revolt against Manusmriti. Jainism and sikhism broke the brahminical dominance as well.
The Bengal roots of liberalism may be traced back into History as the Bengali linguistics as well as the the literature roots in Charyapada, the Buddhist poetry written by Dalits only. Mangal Kavya tradition was also a subaltern initiative in creativity.
Poet Jaidev happens to be the original Baul. He was the man who transformed the Divine and Princely Love into Love between human beings. Krishna and Radha were commoners. The poetry of Jaidev, particularly Geet Govindam was then the first spring for the Common Men and the Individual in Asia. It happened long before English and french Renaissance. West could not break the impact of Greek, Latin and roman Classical Aesthetic values , but an Indian Classic Poet, the last in the line of Sanskrit classical Literature, Jaidev broke the brahminical, feudal so called classic barriers of Content and Form. Jaidev deviated delibrately from pure sanskrita Rhythm and Aesthetics and used indigenous format modified into Classic sanskrit. Jaidev wrote during Bengali Feudal Consumer age where commoners had no scope in life and livlihood. It is intersting that Indian Literary Faculty focuses so much so on Kalidas, Shudrak and others but the most modern and most popular poet Jaidev and his contribution never discussed in Universities.
Krishna Prem, the divine love transformed and personified Human is the inspiration of all Bauls. These bauls are the first hand Rebels against Religion as they broke from caste system and holy Books, religious discipline. Muslim Sufi and Bhakti Andolan in North India modified the Baul Stream into secular format. Laln fakir is the most prominent name in baul tradition. Who was born Hindu and Converted in Islam. The Baul Clan seeks salvation in Human Body. The Freedom of body was later discovered by post Modern thinkers but our dalit folk poets Hindu as well as Muslim sought for it for no less than five hundred years!
Rabindra Nath Tagore declared himself a Baul. Tagore`s literary philosophy is rooted into this Baudha and Baul tradition deeply. His classic poetic drama Chandalika and several poems strikingly advocates the Buddhist ways of salvation. Tagores Spiritualism, particularly identified in Geetanjali is the Sum Total of Buddhist, vaishnav and baul Tradition.
Most strikingly, neither Tagore nor Jaided were a dalit. Jaidev was a Brahmin. Elite Brahmin. So, chaitanya mahaparabhu was also an Elite Brahmin. but he was the first Individual in this subcontinent who worked for the annihilation of caste. Like Charvak he decared all Brahminical Rituals irrelevant.
Brahminical Bengal, with the rise of Sen Dynasty after the demise of dalit Baudh Pal dynasty cruelly crushed Buddhists and converted them in lowest Untouchabales. they were driven away in Southern Bengal, in and around the delta of Sundervana. Later these dalits led by Namoshudras, rajbanshi and Paundra and Malo led the national dalit Movement in preindependence United India.Since Sen Dynasty, Brahmins took over Bengal.
The experiments by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was never liked by the Nawab of murshidabad as his Brahmin councillors advised him that it might lead to revolution. Caitanya Mahaprabhu had followers in Hindu as well as Muslims as Kabeer had and later, Harichand Thakur, the leader of Neel Revolt in bengal and also the crusader against Untouchability had. Chaitanya had to fight against the Muslim as well as hindu brahminical Hegemony as he was a crusader aginst castism and Untouchability.
A Marxist Minister form tripura is experimentin with the Philosophy of Love to address Extremism in North East. Mind you, that Brahminical Bengal finished the Vaishnav anti Manusmriti Humanist tradition though they could not finish the Baul Tradition. It is North east, particularly, Manipur which Paractices Vaishnav as religion , culture, literature and life as well.
I hope you may get relevant matter brousing net and libraries. I have been writing intermittently on Net in english. But you may get my articles in Hindi on Print as well. I suggest you to try the files of Hans and Samayantra.
